Collector Cards

What is the hottest selling type of collectors card, aside from sports cards?

Aside from baseball cards, football cards and other sports cards, what type of collectors cards are people buying? For example, my son was into Pokemon several years ago and I still have many of those. I paid $25.00 at the time for a dark charizard card. Are people still collecting and paying premium prices for game cards? If so, whats popular?

Thanks!

yugioh is hot right now. on ebay, some people are paying $2050$ for one card!
but, i heard that a new card game is coming out later this year/early 2007, and it's going to be hot!

It may not be the most easily of verbalised facts, or the easiest to hear, but an enormous part of the economy, the retail side, is dependent on the habits of the collector – a club that has more members than one might think given a cursory regard to the subject matter.

The habits and obsessions of anyone from the grandmother who cannot sleep without yards and yards of Royal Dalton adorned shelving around the house, to the teenager who needs all the Smiths albums on ten-inch vinyl, unplayed and unopened, are integral to the section of the economy that not only thrives but absolutely survives on selling things that we do not need to people who do not need them.

The collector is that rare beast that is both delicate but also strongly loyal, willing to put up with much as long as they get home and the item they have lusted over provides the fix, no matter how small and fleeting and ultimately insignificant, that they were after and expected. It is difficult, as a retailer, to entice them to stay, but once you have them, you have them for life (or the life of the enterprise), so long as nothing changes, at all, even slightly.

It is a delicate relationship between retailer and collector, one that is, fair enough, friendly, even personal at some level or other, but ultimately rests on the fact that one thing must, simply must, be provided in exactly the way it is required. If the shoe is not perfect to the woman who has nine hundred shoes, the bond is broken, if the album does not have the original 1979 sleeve notes, it just isn't worth buying. This is all part of the deal, and the successful retailer for unessential items has to have the skill to realise this, has to have the inside information, has to know the passions and the loves and the whys and wherefores that go on inside the mind of the collector. In short, the retailer needs to be a collector, too.
