Collecting Fantasy Collectibles as a Hobby

Copyright (c) 2010 Ian Campbell

The world of fantasy collectibles is a very broad church and a fascinating hobby that will keep you engaged for many years. In recent years the fantasy genre has really come to the fore in movies and literature for all ages. The Lord of the Rings films gave a great fillip to a style of movie that had earned itself a name as the province of low-budget nonsense majoring in scantily clad maidens in distress. Buffy the Vampire Slayer introduced a hitherto unseen sophistication and humor to the fantasy world.

Youngsters too have really taken to fantasy in recent years: Harry Potter, the boy wizard has become a world-wide phenomenon and the Twilight films are sparking scenes of fan worship older people will associate with the height of Beatlemania. With the explosive growth of the genre has come a similar explosion in associated memorabilia and collectible items: from film posters to spin-off books and costumes to beautifully realized figurines.

To get started in a fantasy collection is not difficult. Cinemas showing fantasy films will often stock a range of related collectibles too and toy stores and department stores too will have something in stock. Although the main target audience for much of this new fantasy material is young, people of all ages can enjoy collecting fantasy collectibles.

And, if you want to get more serious about your collection and perhaps branch out into collectibles not related to blockbusting film hits you'll want to find some specialist shops. Try your local comic book store which will often stock some of the more hard-to-find collectibles as part of their stock - you may wish to add a fantasy comic book collection to your hobby while you're at it.

Fantasy is particularly well-suited to the internet where you'll find any number of message boards, groups and forums related to particular fantasy franchises and genres as well as swap and sell sites. Although many of these collectibles are sold to be painted by the buyer and played with by children, for your collection to maintain the optimum value it's actually best to keep everything in its original packaging.

E-Bay is just the best known of the auction sites and certainly worth looking through; always bear in mind that many sellers will categorize these potentially valuable items as toys when you're searching. Collecting has turned into a worldwide business for many. What will your next collection hold?

Question by Leslie: What is the best way to get started in Rare Book Collecting?
I read there is a book fair in SanFrancisco next week and I want to go and be somewhat knowledgeable.

Best answer:

Answer by blue
Talk to your local librarian. He/she can give you tips and select some books for you to read about purchasing rare books.

Go on eBay and see which books are receiving high bids.

Go to a used book store and ask the owner for help.

Be prepared to pay both for the book and for an increase in your homeowners insurance.

No Longer the Hobby of Kings Coin Collecting is for Everyone

Collecting coins has been called the hobby of kings because in the early days of coin collecting kings were the only ones wealthy enough to be able to save coins as most people spent any coins they received to stay alive.

Luckily for us collecting coins, or numismatics as it formally called, is a fascinating hobby that is open to anyone today. You can literally begin as a casual collector right now with the change in your pocket or purse and grow from there as you gain more knowledge and experience.

What makes coin collecting so unique is the fact that there are so many areas to consider specializing in. Some of the possible areas of collecting include collecting coins of your country, foreign coins, paper money, antique coins and coins with minting errors.

You can even focus on specific historical periods such as coins of the 1900s or coins of the Roman Empire. The possibilities are endless and it can be somewhat difficult to decide just where to begin.

Many beginning coin collectors start collecting coins from their country as they are most well-known to them. I would advise going to your local library and taking out a couple of books on coin collecting to give you some ideas on the various types of coins available and they are graded and valued. This will also help you to make a decision on any particular types of coins you want to start collecting and give you a solid background on the history of the coins.

I can assure you that will find coins that were produced in the past that you never knew existed. For example, did you know that at one time the United States minted a twenty cent piece or a two cent piece?

A local coin club can help you grow your skills and is a great way to meet other collectors in your area. They are also a good source for local coin show information and can give you the low down on local coin dealers. The Internet is also home to some great collecting resources.

A key point to remember when first starting out in coin collecting is to control your excitement if you can. That way you will not go out and start buying coins without first gaining the proper knowledge and this can save you a lot of money in the long run.

I can tell you there were some coins I wouldn't have bought had I been a little savvier in subjects like coin grading when I was just beginning.

The good news is coin collecting has grown so popular that there are very strict grading standards in use today to protect collectors and with the abundance of coin collecting information available it is simple to determine a coin's value.

Many hobbies can be costly to participate in but you can start collecting coins for next to nothing and as your collecting skills develop you will have the confidence to buy or trade coins of higher value. By starting slowly you can avoid making bad purchases that could diminish your enthusiasm for one of the most satisfying and rewarding hobbies there is.

Collect Barbie Dolls for a Profitable Hobby

The New York toy fair hosted the introduction of a phenomenon in 1959. This was when Barbie dolls were introduced to the world. They are still made at the present time and many millions have been sold all over the globe. Barbie doll collecting is a very popular hobby as a result and Mattel estimates that there are over 100,000 people who collect Barbie dolls. Most of these are female and
are on average 40 years old. They tend to buy about 20 barbie dolls each every year.

Barbie underwent many changes in appearance over the years. The first Barbie had a ponytail hairstyle and wore a zebra striped one piece swimsuit. She was copyright dated 1958 on the back and on the bottom of the right foot was marked Made In Japan. This is the rarest Barbie and if you locate one in really nice condition it is quite valuable.

Vintage Barbie dolls are considered by collectors to be those made between 1959 and 1972. Dolls made after this time are modern dolls in collectors terms. Mattel made special edition dolls in the later years which have their own collector following. To be a real collectors item these later Barbies must be in the original box and in mint condition. There were several series of these which were made in varying quantities.

The Pink Label collectible Barbies were made with no limit to the quantity. The Silver Label dolls were a limited edition of up to 50,000 and were distributed worldwide. Gold Label Barbie dolls were made in an edition of up to 25,000. The top tier is the Platinum Label dolls which were limited to 1000 dolls. These label edition dolls are much sought after by collectors. They must be in mint condition in the original box to have value as a collectors item.

Barbie doll collecting is popular in many countries around the world. Pre 1972 vintage Barbies are the most sought after and many are still to be found in garage sales, flea markets, thrift stores and such like places. Most people know nothing about vintage Barbie dolls or their values. As a result there are lots of them still out there waiting for the right collector to come along and find them. The thrill of the hunt can be almost obsessive and can get an avid collector out of bed to be an early bird at garage sales or flea markets. It's all worth it when that early Barbie is purchased for a song and carried home triumphantly to join her sisters in a collection.

Want to find thousands of Barbie dolls and accessories with prices starting at and up? This is even cheaper than garage sales. There are lots of Barbie clothes and accessories also which can be had for a song. Check this out: http://www.collectbarbiedolls.com

Question by painforpassion: Doll Collecting - Danbury Mint Storybook dolls?
I have a collection of dolls from the late 80's. As far as I've been told, I have the whole set, in the original boxes, with all the original pieces, and all the certificates. However, I'm having trouble finding a complete list of all the dolls in the set so I can be sure.
Some of the dolls in the set I'm referring to are here:

http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=danbury+mint+storybook&category0=

Also, as a side note, does the value of a doll collection go up if you have a complete set? I've never really been an avid collector so I don't know.

Start Stamp Collecting As Your Hobby

Stamp collecting, also known as philately, is a popular and educational past time.  Stamp collectors save stamps from letters, especially those from other countries.  They also search out old stamps that represent a past time.  Stamp enthusiasts can be found everywhere.  Their notebooks and glassine envelopes filled with stamps are fascinating to look through.  Many of the stamps they collect are very valuable as well.

Materials needed for starting a stamp collection include a stamp album and special mounting tapes called hinges.  Tools you will find useful are a pair of small tongs or tweezers for carefully lifting delicate old stamps and a magnifying glass for finding minute details.  The beginning philatelist can start with the stamps on the mail that arrives this very day.  To remove a stamp from an envelope, carefully tear away the envelope from around the stamp being careful not to tear the stamp itself.  Now soak the stamp in warm water.  The remaining piece of envelope will turn loose, allowing you to lift the stamp from the water with the tongs.

Lay the stamp on absorbent paper.  When dry, place a heavy book on top of the stamp to flatten it.  As a past time, stamp collecting requires precision and neatness.  Place the dried and flattened stamp in the album by using one of the hinges, or store it in one of the tiny glassine envelopes unique to stamp collecting.

Many collectors specialize in collecting currently available commemoratives as a past time.  Stamp designs are varied, beautiful and interesting.  Commemoratives are those special stamps that are released by the post office for a limited time.  They can commemorate special people or events.  Most nations print commemorative stamps from time to time.  American stamps have featured wild life, artists, antiques, and many other themes.  In fact, there is an annual contest in which American school children compete to draw the best picture of a wild duck.  The best duck art is featured on a stamp.

A fun way for a young person to build a collection of foreign stamps is to find a few pen pals in foreign countries.  This activity helps people make friends as well as broadening their outlook.  There are also companies that will send out introductory collections of foreign stamps in order to get stamp collecting customers on their mailing lists.  These collections are usually colorful and contain a wide variety.

Stamp collecting is an educational past time.  Stamp collections can sometimes become very valuable to the right people.  If you are looking for a new hobby or past time, stamp collecting might be for you!

Developing the hobby of coin collection

The hobby of coin collection is quite ancient and people have been collecting coins for two major reasons. The first reason is that people like collecting coins from different countries and civilizations as a passion. They don't have much interest in selling these coins in the future and getting a profit. However the second lot of people invest in coin collection as they know that the value of these coins will definitely see an upward trend and they can perhaps make profit from any transaction where they want to sell the coins. The experts say that you can start in the range of about 30 dollars for a collector's coin in the beginning. Remember that you have to see that your passion for collecting coins continues. Hence be slow and steady in the beginning so that you eventually know whether you want to continue with your dream. Once you are sure that you have developed a liking for it you can increase speed pace of collecting coins.

Hence when you see your coin collection start to grow gradually and then you will obviously want to buy the antique or more expensive coins. You may also find some very good deals at the online auction houses where you can bid for rare coins. If you are lucky you can buy coins at prices that you can easily afford. So you should definitely be on the lookout for such online auction houses. If you search on the internet for them you will find several of these reputable sites. Find out which coin collecting companies are reputable and deal only with these companies. This way you will ensure yourself that you buy only genuine coins and not buy expensive coins and then find out that they were fakes.

You can have a look at coins on the websites and then make a future purchase list. You should also set a priority as to which coin you will buy first and which coin will you buy later on. If you plan your coin collection it will really be very helpful to you. For more information on the art of coin collection you can visit reputed coin collection websites. Here not only can you find complete information on the coins you want to buy but you can actually do transactions such as selling and buying.

It is best if you purchase a nice box or a case holder to put your collection into. The best option is the case holder as it will keep all coins ion place. In case you keep them in the box then the coins may rub against each other and then they may lose their luster. Hence a case holder will help in preserving the quality of the coins. It is necessary that you take proper care of these coins.

Websites like Build Coin Assets have information on the step by step approach to collect coins. Do have a look at such coin collecting websites in case you want to change your dream into a reality.

Comic Book Prices Only Part of Your Hobby

Comic book collecting was once the realm of children who only cared about comic book prices as buyers. They weren't selling or trying to get the best deal. Comic book prices affected whether they could get comic books that week, and how many they could get.

Comic book prices were printed on the items they wanted and were therefore static. If they wanted a 25-cent cartoon book, they had to come up with a quarter with which to buy it.

Back then, there were no cartoon book collection supplies or cartoon book collecting bloggers. Collectors were pretty much on their own. They made their choices according to what they liked.

Then they grew up. Comic book prices went up. But they also discovered that many people were getting rid of their old collections and that they were able to buy books that they had always wanted.

Savvy collectors who were getting rid of their books reasoned that people would be willing to pay good money for books they really wanted. A new kind of cartoon book market was born.

As this market evolves and becomes more complicated, collectors have begun to trade more than cartoon books; they have begun trading information.

Whole businesses have grown up around selling cartoon book collection supplies and cartoon book collecting bloggers are out there filling the Internet with all kinds of information.

There is an infinite number of variables that cause comic book prices to go up or down. Of course, it can all be filed under the law of supply and demand, but so many things affect demand that it takes an expert just to make an educated guess. And cartoon book collecting bloggers don't have to have any special credentials to dispense information.

All they have to be is convincing. So if you are searching for the best way to handle collecting, buying and selling, or the best cartoon book collection supplies to buy, it's best to look at a lot of sources, to cross reference, and to look very skeptically at what people say.

If you are a beginning collector, decide on the comic book collection supplies that you will need to start your collection. If you plan on buying and selling comic books, for instance, keep a system of the ones you buy and sell.

Also, buy a cartoon book price guide so you can keep up with the latest trends in the industry. With enough research, you will be able to tell experts from beginners in the cartoon book field.

Comic book collecting was once a simple and fun pastime that was meant for kids. In the last few decades, though, it has become a way to make money because of their increasing value over the years.

Comic book prices have increased as a result of their potential. But cartoon book collecting can still be fun. If had a collection as a kid, you can find the comic book prices on the market and sell them if you'd like.

Or, if you'd rather, just learn more about the industry so you know what kind of precious commodities you have in your possession. With the wide selection of cartoon book collection supplies and comic book collection bloggers, there is an entirely new aspect to the entire industry.

Everything you want to know about comic books is at your fingertips from Mike Selvon's portal. A free gift awaits you along with a lot more information about comic book prices. Visit us and leave a comment at our cartoons blog.

Question by Doogie: What comic books or graphic novels are a good read?
I have been out of the comic book world for 15 years and a friend recommended Josh Whedon's Astonishing X-men vol 1 - 4. I loved it and looking for more comic books that are just a fun read with great art. What do you recommend?

Best answer:

Answer by jplatt39
For just a good read if you never caught up with the French and the Belgians, Herge's Tintin (especially the Seven Crystal Balls and its sequel Prisoners of the Sun or Destination Moon and its sequel Explorers on the Moon) are comic book classics. And I've seen some reprints of two volumes in one which bring those back together. Other French books sometimes available in translation are Asterix the Gaul, of course, Charlier and Giraud (Giraud is known in the US as Moebius)'s Fort Navajo, and Roger Leloup's Yoko Tsuno. These are all graphic novels, some quite old some of the Leloup ones quite recent, which are all VERY entertaining and as good as comics ever get.

The Wolverine/Weapon X stories are other classics, as are Mike Mignola's Hellboy -- though I will admit I haven't seen those lately. Spiegelman's Maus and Joe Kubert's Fax from Sarajevo are more serious work but also worth reading.

Some of the Manga is quite good. While I enjoy the Naruto anime, Bleach, as manga, is a better read. And I still see Akira around. That was a classic film -- as good as any ever made ever. And the Manga is better.

Know better? Leave your own answer in the comments!

Coin Collecting ? A Rewarding Hobby

Though it may not have the same abdominal excitement as, say, hang gliding, it's got a subdued joy that's more than worth the experience. The enjoyment of collecting valuable, certified coins is a pleasure that should not be missed. While this may be difficult for some to realize, coin collecting is a reward all its own and, for people that do it, there's nothing else like it. To comprehend the pleasure of coin collecting is to grasp the pleasure of discovery. You don't collect coins simply to have metal around, you collect coins to generate wealth for yourself and, if you elect, for generations to come.

With coin collecting and the quantity of coins minted around the planet, there's always something new to find out. There are always more coins, more designs, more memorial editions, and more periods in history to explore. Meaning that completing a coin collection is never ending, as there are always more coins to collect. I have found collecting, graded collectible coins can be a wonderful learning experience that I can share with my family.  Plus, there is always more to study on coins and coin accumulating. With each article, book, or simple observation there are a few things new to learn, contemplate, or ultimately decide.

And don't forget, coin collecting has its more tangible rewards. Coins do have a tendency to increase as the years pass on, so there are financial rewards as well as the psychological rewards. In fact, gold and silver coins aren't getting any commoner, so there is a real likelihood they are  only going to rise in value over a period of time.

Therefore with all of these exciting reasons to coin collecting, how does one actually commence with coin collecting? With me, I elected to concentrate on graded, collectible gold and silver coins.  Of course, I pay close attention to the various coins that come into my possession from day-to-day however, highly graded (Mint State 70) gold and silver coins are my concentration.  These are not your run of the mill "bullion" coins.  The type of valuable coin I collect stands apart as unique because its value is based upon 4 key elements: 1) precious metal content; 2) variety; 3) collector demand; and 4) actual condition.
I purchase my collectible coins from Numis, the only source that I'm aware of that guarantees the perfect quality (MS70) of the coins.  With Numis you can be assured that every coin is beautiful, valuable and in flawless condition.  Visit Numis at http://www.CoinsDelivered.com

Discover the wonders of coin collecting.  With time you'll be able to assemble a magnificent set of coins that not only builds and creates wealth, but can be enjoyed for generations to come.

How Great Is The Hobby Of Stamp Collecting?

How Great Is The Hobby Of Stamp Collecting?. Indeed there is no doubt about stamp collecting being the Greatest Hobby On Earth.

What is Stamp Collecting or Philately?.. Stamp Collecting or Philately as it is called is the pursuit of collecting, arranging and studying postage stamps, stamped envelopes and other items used in various Countries of the World at different times to effect prepayment of letters through the Post.

Stamp Collecting unlike games of football, cricket and squash-racket is a pastime that attracts not only the interests of adults but children alike. Kings, Queens, the rich and the poor

It is a mistaken belief to regard Stamp Collecting as only Children Hobby. It may interest you to learn that participation at certain stages of the hobby are very much beyond the capacities of children as would their participation in test cricket matches etc.

Stamp Collecting or Philately is the study of stamps, their production. It has developed into two broad groups - those who collect and study stamps and those who collect stamps as souvenirs.

A new collector may not be sure of what kind of stamps to collect. It is however advisable that he should acquire and study as many different stamps as he can because the experience gained will help him to grasp the fundamentals of the subject.

Later on, he can decide upon concentrating on a single country's issues or those of a group. To engage in this hobby, physical condition is of no vital importance as very little actual physical energy is required to carry it on and money does not always determine the value of a collection to its owner.

Often no money at all is involved except perhaps for an album and stamp collecting accessories. A stamp off a letter from a foreign country can be of as much value to a true collector as a rare and high-priced stamp might be to on me who can spend hundreds of us$ to indulge in his hobby.

Just like any other hobby, the real value of a collection comes from the use made of it by its owner. A small collection of a few hundred common stamps may give a greater thrill out of having such a collection than would a rich man who has spent  hundreds of us$ merely to have a 'Display Collection..

Here indeed is a hobby that can be tailored to fit the needs of any individual. One from which almost endless hours of fun, relaxation, education and pride of ownership can be extracted.

Perhaps the easiest way to 'build' a collection is to exchange one's surplus stamps with other collectors. This sort of exchange goes on everyday among thousands of collectors worldwide

The Hobby Of Collecting Figurines

Millions of people throughout the world take great joy in the hobby of collecting figurines. If you are thinking of starting your own collectible figurine collection, you can purchase your first figurine through various channels, such as buying it online or going to a wholesale figurine market.

Nowadays, figurine collection has become an interesting and fascinating hobby. In fact, with the use of the internet, starting your own figurine collection has become even easier. No matter what type of figurine you are looking for, you will find a wide range of collectible figurines available on the internet, which you can buy from the comfort of your own home and at a reasonable price too. You can also purchase figurines by bidding on online auctions. However, take care not to bid too much on figurines as you would not want your figurine collection to become a financial burden on you.

If you want to order a special type of figurine such as an angel figurine or a fairy figurine, be sure to ask the supplier to display the models and list of your choice. It is also important to specify the size of your figurine before placing the purchase order. Images and pictures of figurines online are often not truly representative of the actual size of the figurines and may often appear larger than the actual dimensions.

Furthermore, some special figurines such as angel figurine may cost you more, as they can be custom made according to your desire. The modern porcelain angel figurine comes in various materials and shapes, so be sure to specify the material and other features that you wish your angel figurine or fairy figurine to have. Fairy figurines are also available in many models and dimensions. Another type of collectible figurine that many people love to collect is the pewter figurine of mythical creatures.

If you consider your figurine collection to be of great value, you should consider passing it on to your future generation as collectible figurines increase in values over time. You will be surprised to know that there is a science to collecting figurines and the more you become involved in the hobby of collecting figurines, the more you will want to learn about it.

Before starting your collection, visit specialty shops like wholesale figurine shops or ask a few friends or relatives who are experienced in collecting figurines for suggestions on how to get started and also on how to negotiate successfully with sellers of figurines

Stamp Collecting: a Great Hobby for Kids

You know what it is like when the kids have time off from school and the weather is playing up. They always sit about moping and saying they are bored, even though they have endless video games and toys at their disposal. What they needs is a past-time that has been around for generations, is cheap and easy to get started in and won't make much mess for the parents to tidy up. Stamp collecting for kids may not sound like the answer to parent's dreams but with so many possibilities on offer, this is one hobby that is sure to be a hit.

Stamp collecting for kids is a great hobby because it doesn't cost a lot of money to get started. Every kid will start with a few stamps. Later the kid can develop their collection based on what he likes. The hobby may look dull and boring but if the kids see the wide variety of stamps the kids will get to like it right away. There are countless stamps featuring their favorite comic book heroes, singers, TV shows and sporting stars which means that stamp collecting for kids can follow on from their existing likes. Stamps are being issued all the time and some of them feature kid's favorite. The means that they can have a collection without knowing that they are already collecting stamps.

Another great benefit of stamp collecting for kids is what the child buys today can be a great investment for their future. There are a number of investors putting money into stamps to guarantee a return in the future and even on a child's pocket money, a decent collection built in their youth can provide a return when they are older. It may not be enough to put them through college but it can certainly provide a return to allow them to have some fun when they get there. So stamp collecting for kid can be really fun. And in the future, their stamp collection can bring them money too!

One thing that most parents like about stamp collecting is that it is a hobby that will keep them buzy. It is also a hobby that will teach their kids about value and learning how to take care of their things. The kids may think that they are not learning much in this hobby. However, they may not realized that they are cultivating the responsibility of taking care of a collection. This trait will serve them well in the future. That is one reason why many parents like to see their children to take up stamp collecting. It is even better if they have some friends with the same hobby as it will allow them even more interaction as they can swap and collect together.

Stamp collecting for kids may not be the most exciting hobby in the world. Most kids would rather play video games. However, it is a hobby that will still provide fun, instill reponsibility and allows interaction with other people.
