in what states is it illegal to carry a fixed blade knife?

my brother and i were watching the show "cops" and someone was taken to jail for carrying a fixed blade knife (one that does not fold down) in what states is that illegal because my brother has one for hunting that he carries with him and we live in Michigan...

Most states it depends on the length and purpose and whether it is concealed. If you are carrying a knife with an open handle and it is not too long for the purposes of hunting or utility, then you are probably okay. If you are walking down a city street with a machete attached to your waist, probably not.

There's the letter of the law and then the spirit of the law.

something thats tough, built like a tank, medium sized blade. stays sharp for a long time. good grip etc, you know. best bang for the buck

i heard mtech makes some solid knives, not as good as ryan but still good.

If I were you I would go with CRKTs line up, some of which can be found at Wal-Mart or most outdoors type stores. They are well made, sharp and will fit in your price range.The one you have your eye on is a great choice.

How can I tell if a knife is a switch blade or folding knife?

Here's a knife I'm looking at buying:

However, switch blades (where you press a button and the blade springs out) are illegal, so I'm hoping it is just a manual folding knife. How can I tell from the picture which type it is? Looks like there might be a button on it, but I'm not sure.

switch blades are either one: spring loaded and shoot strait up....or 2: spring loaded and shoot out from a fixed point..i.e. in a 180 degree Manner.. either way...its spring loaded

Emerson Knives is a very interesting story.  The founder Ernest R. Emerson. Ernest Emerson is a Martial artist and that is what he started off doing. He was born in Northern Wisconsin. Later he realized that he was on to something at started charging $50 each. Emerson made such good knives that his reputation started to grow. Emerson started to branch out and started making fixed-blade knives part time as he also worked with his martial arts training.

Then Later Emerson went to a gun show and saw a Michael Walker folding knife a thought is great design.  After this Emerson chose to make pocket knives from then on out. He contacted walker about using the Walker Linerlock on his own pocket knives and  after that there was no looking back. Emerson quickly became a big name in the pocket knives world. Emerson first pocket knives where more on the decorative side, but now he make more practical pocket knives that our military and SEALs teams use and he even made pocket knives for NASA. Emerson knives a very popular with collectors as well. Emerson's first knives logo feature a Bowie knife and it very rear to find, and as a result very popular with collectors.

Emerson Knives Inc is located in Torrance, California. It has a very small staff, but make some of the best tactical on the market to day. Also Emerson has worked with many other knife manufactures even his competition  like Gerber Knives. Is this a switchblade or a folding knife according to california state law?

I don't like leaving my house defenseless so i usually carry a small knife on me. I usually carry a folding knife which i know is legal, but i just recently got a new knife which may or may not be considered a switchblade. It is a stiletto styled knife with a 3.45 inch blade. It isn't a double edged knife and i know for a fact that if it is considered a folding knife its legal and if its considered a switchblade it definitely isn't. The way it opens is by pressing on a part attached to the blade in order to start the opening motion, the rest is done by a spring. The blade comes out of the side of the handle, just like a folding knife, and folds back in the same way. It has a locking mechanism identical to that of a common folding knife. I'm not sure if this matter but it does have a glass punch at the base of the handle.

in general that is. Lets just say a civilian who is not an emergency personel. I am using that photo as an reference, so assume there is no EMS emblem on there.

Is that knife legal to carry around if clipped onto the belt or in a pocket?

The knife blade is measured 3.5 inches. Not automatic opening, manual opening.

This knife is legal in the State of California to carry on your person. There is no length limit in California for folding knives unless that knife is automatic or a butterfly knife (in which case they are limited to 2").

The partial exception is Los Angeles. In LA, they have an unsual law that makes openly carrying a knife with a blade more than 3" illegal, but carrying concealed is fine no matter how large. Interesting, isn't it?

People get CA's law mixed up a lot, like confusing the switchblade law as applying to regular folding knives, but it's not how it works. This knife is fine and indeed is a good knife for person to have in an emergency if they are in a car accident. Nobody would consider this knife a weapon.

The balisong knife other wise known as the batangas knife, fan knives click clack, and most known it the U.S. as a butterfly knife. Is a knife that  would be considered a pocket knife it has two handles that are both on a  hinge and the knife itself folds in to the handle and in the hands of someone that knows how to use it and be flipped open every quickly with just one hand. For the most part these knives are pocket knives size but are also make in sword size and can be over three feet when fully opened. These bigger blades are not surprisingly called baliswords.

All those now on is really sure where the name balisong comes form that are a few thoughts as to what it is referring to. In the Tagalog language  balisong or Baling sungay means broken horn, and because the first knives where made of animal horns many think that is where the name comes from. Others think that they are called balisong for the reason the they are thought to first be invented in a town called balisong. These pocket knives origins are from the Philippines and  though discouraged now for hundreds of years where once used to fight in duels.

These pocket knives where not known to western civilizations until the Spanish came and governed the Philippines and then made these knives  popular. Though evidence suggests that Balisong knives have been apart of the Filipino fighting arts since 800AD. Balisongs where brought back to the states after WWII when troops that where fighting in the pacific came home and brought these handy pocket knives back with them.

A balisong is mainly made up of ten parts. The edge, swedge, choil, kicker, pivot pins, tang, tang pin, bite handle, safe handle, and latch.  The edge is the sharp blade of the knife. The swedge is the back side of the blade that is made to look sharp but is not. The choil is a curve above the kicker to help you to sharpen the blade. The kicker is what stops the blade for hitting the inside of the knife when closing to help keep the blade sharp. The pivot pins are the pins that the knife pivots on to open and close. The tang is where the blade come in to the handle. The bite handle is the part that closes on the sharp side of the blade. The safe handle is the part that closes on the back side of the blade, the part that is not sharp. The latch, this is what keeps the knife closed.

There are now a number of knives makers in the U.S that make balisongs or butterfly knives. One of them is   Benchmade. Another well known knife make is Emerson. Emersons very first knives where balisongs that he made while studding Filipino martial arts in California. Because of the nature of these pocket knives many countries have them outlawed. But are very sought after by collectors.

i have a folding knife like a swiss army knife its stainless steel and wood on the sides to hold it together i got dirt in the knife so can i run water on the knife so it gets it out???
