What material would make the strongest, sharpest most effective combat sword? I think it is Damascus steel?

I think even A sword made of one single carved sharpened diamond in its most perfect impure form would be more brittle and easy to break than some steel alloys.

Damascus steel which its stringth made by adding Carbon nanotubes (one of, if not the strongest and stiffest material known).

Studies of old swords have discovered clear evidence of carbon nanotubes and nanowires, and associated cementite wires. They believe that the nanotubes and the nanowires were formed by the special process of forging and annealing the steel, and could explain the unique mechanical properties of the swords.

Small amount of vanadium would theoretically strengthen the blade.
Add some Tungsten carbide to the mixture to make your sword more extremely hard!

Cold Steel is a leader in many sorts of edged weapons. Cold Steel makes every thing from pocket knives, hunting knives, Fixed blades, tomahawks, machetes, swords, and kukris. knife values. hurry! please, need help!?

i recently purchased 2 knives from a man. he made them, his name is Greg Neely and is a master smith in the United States. i am wondering how much one of them is worth. it is a 300 layer damascus steel blade, a hunting knife, handle is made of grenadillo wood from south texas, the blade size is 4 1/2 inches and the overall length is 8 3/4 inches. it has a 416 stainless steel guard and the handle is of a mortised tang construction. the blade is made of SAE 1084 and 15n20 steel. the blade is acid-etched and hand polished. he is also the chairman of the American Blade-smith Society. he only sells 3 or 4 of his knives to his best friends and family. i purchased the knife for $2000, about how much do you thing it is worth?
i am absolutely positive this knife is worth over $2000. this man is rated americas best knife-maker

It depends on how badly I needed a knife. If I just looking for a knife and I liked the looks of the one you described I suppose I might pay as much as $100.00 maybe a bit more if I really liked it. Now if I was in a situation where I really needed a knife I might be talked into returning your investment to you. The situation would have to be pretty bad.

The best knife I have is an old Ruanna (spelling?). It was given to me. I retired it from the field after someone told me that it was worth at least several hundred dollars. Hope my wife doesn't find out the value. Still I hate to see it collecting dust and am thinking of using it again.

Hunting knives...What steel do you like best and why?

I have had a couple Damascus steels, a couple 440C SS, and lately, purchased one with AUS 8 steel and one with San Mai III steel. I like the last 2 the best since they sharpen well and hold an edge very well, but is all the 'carbon' hype or whatever the new alloy name is, really worth the big bucks? My Cold Steel Hatamoto was almost $300 and just curious if the steel is worth all of that ching. Thanks everyone!

Alright brew, good question that I can most definitely help you with.

Firstly, I try to avoid stainless steels, even the 440C pales in comparison to mid/high carbon steels such as 1075 in edge holding/durability. All of the knives I've made were from O1, W1, W2, 10XX series steels, 5160 (my favorite... leaf springs!!!), 52100 (PITA to work, but it's like 5160 with attitude), and finally L-6.

I love the plain "non-hype" steels that people don't like because they aren't "shiny" and aren't popular unless their yuppie friend has one and they want one exactly like it. I don't think the prices Cold Steel asks for their knives are too fair to tell you the truth. Hell, all of the damascus I've done was usually with L-6 (high nickel), and 1095! Great color contrast between two different steels (high nickel leaves bright bands and low carbon is eaten away, leaving the "etchings" from the ferric chloride, or etchant of choice).

Aus 8 is a great steel, a bit of a pain to work with, but nonetheless, is wonderful as far as edge holding goes. I found that it can be brittle sometimes.

Look for a Ka-bar (original USMC). 1095 will do all the same as the others, at far less the cost of all of that "hype" stuff.

Better yet, get a worn out file (old Nicholson or Welkd files are great), sit it in a wood stove overnight (in the embers... it will be annealed by the time you pull it out in the morning... trust me), sit down with a bench grinder, belt sander, files (non-worn), what have you... and make a nice blade from that. Files are usually 01, W1, W2... and will hold an edge a hell of a lot longer than everything else out there (providing you heat treat it correctly... oxy torch and can of oil for that). It's the way I started, and guess what? I still have a couple of those knives.

I'd like to continue on, but I might start rambling... plus I told my darlin' that I'd take her out to dinner (time for me to get my checkbook...)

Benchmade knife Company is a very good knife company. Located out of  Oregon City Oregon. It is Run by Roberta and Les De Asis.  Benchmade makes many different styles of knives, Products that are good for the military, law-enforcement, search and rescue, as well as most of your outdoor sports such as hunting , fishing , and camping. Benchmade knives also makes knives for cutlery. Many of these knives are pocket knives, folding knives and hunting knives.

Benchmade started in California in the year 1988. Then in 1990 moved to Clackamas Oregon, where it became a leader in the manufacturer of Butterfly knives. The Butterfly knives have some what become Benchmades trademark and in fact on there knives the have  a logo of a butterfly. Now in 2009 the company Benchmade employs around 150 people and has moved to Oregon City Oregon where they still produce over 90% of the company's knives, and  has expanded to making just about every sort of knife that you can think of. Plus many other tools.

Benchmade uses very good quality steel in there knives, and there products are more often then not on the high end of the knife market. Using steel such as 154CM, D2, and CPM S30V steel. Even thought Benchmade makes a good amount of income in the privet market, much of there income comes from military and to law enforcement. Benchmade makes auto, hunting, fishing and the list goes on and on but there balisongs are still at the core of there products.

Benchmade has a tradition of working with world renowned  knife makers. Names such as Ernest Emerson, Mel Pardue, mike snodu, Warren Osborne, Allen Elishewitz, and Bob Lum. Jewellery doesn't always have to come from a jewellery store. Handmade jewellery is designed to be a family heirloom that can be passed down to multiple generations. With the holidays coming around, handmade jewellery kits would make a great gift for anyone that is creative and up for the challenge of making handcrafted jewellery.

There are items that are common in a household that can be used to make handmade beads. There are handcrafted jewellery kits that include various colored modeling clay, thick wooden dowels, toothpicks and a plastic knife to make hundreds of colored handcrafted beads for jewellery. Any child can create a unique handmade piece of jewellery and it is easy to make colorful beads without spending a lot of money.

You can make handcrafted clay beads that are two different colors of clay and can be shaped into a snake figure. To make this unique piece of handcrafted jewellery, the two pieces of clay need to be twisted together. The handcrafted snake shaped clay figures can be used to make handmade jewellery like bracelets and rings.

You can also wrap the twisted clay onto a wooden dowel and roll it back and forth until the clay is smooth. The smooth handmade twisted clay can be used to make beads to be used later for a handmade piece of jewellery. When getting ready to make beads, the plastic knife will be used to cut the clay. Once the clay is all cut, the clay needs to be rolled into the shape you desire for beads. Each bead needs to have a homemade hole placed in it with a toothpick.

The clay will need to be baked for 30 minutes at 110˚C to harden the clay. Let the beads cool off for an hour, and then they are ready to be used to make a unique handcrafted piece of jewellery that can be given to anyone as a gift.
