There are many reasons to start a stamp collection.  For one, there is the primal urge to collect things.  Others attach a romance to acquiring postage stamps, its historical association, its many shapes, colors and designs, the mental adventures into to far-away lands, or simply the love of things from an older age.  For this reason, some collectors don't stress financial investments in stamps, but concentrate on free stamp collection.

Free stamp collections are, as the name implies, are stamps free of charge.  You have this from collecting used stamps to getting free stamps from known sources.

The most common way of starting a stamp collection is by saving the postage stamps from foreign mail that one receives.  However, you quickly graduate from this manner of acquiring stamps when the collection is under way because it is not methodical.  

You can find free stamps from old mail at home or your parents' attic. Ask friends and relatives to keep cancelled stamps.

With free stamps, you'll very frequently encounter used stamps that are still attached to envelopes and packages.  Here's how to remove them:

1.Using a pair of scissors, cut around the stamp, taking care not to cut the stamp itself.             

2.In a bowl of lukewarm water, dip the stamp facedown for a few minutes.               

3.The stamp could detach from the envelope and sink.  Otherwise, gently peel it away using small tongs or tweezers.                    
4.Rinse out the back of the stamp to remove the remaining glue off, and place facedown on a paper towel to dry.      

5.Press any wrinkled stamps it in a heavy book to flatten them.

Whatever the reason for collecting, the most effective way by getting as many types of stamps as possible.  From there you can decide where you're more interested in and decide on your specialty.

However, just because it's a free stamp collection doesn't mean it has to be hodge-podge.  Any collection needs to be organized properly.  With your first stamp collection you'll learn the practical basics of philately.  With the aid of a catalogue, you can arrange your stamps in an inexpensive stamp album, according to country of origin and date of issue, or specific themes.

Getting Started With A Free Stamp Collection

Coin collecting is a very rewarding experience, especially as your collection and knowledge begins to grow. Most people see the act of coin collecting as just needing coins and an album, but there are other thing that can supplement your collection and make it an even more fulfilling experience.

Coin albums are a great way to keep all of your physical coins together, but sometimes keeping track of what you do and don't have can be a hard task. That is where coin collecting software comes in to play. Some software, like the Coin Collector's Assistant, will keep you organized. It has a complete coin database with pictures and a ton of customization. These kinds of software are comprehensive and incredibly important for the serious collector.

Being able to print out reports and lists of what you are looking for are great as well, especially when you may be searching for coins in person at various locations. It's also important to remember to always back up your information, just in case anything can happen. Printing out and filing reports every so often is a great way to make sure you have a hard copy.

Other software available include catalogs of obsolete coins and bank notes that are easily search-able. They don't always have a way to track your own collection, but if you are already doing that by hand or another way these are great just to have a full complete list of the rarer finds.

DVDs are a great option as well for those who are interested in the history of coins or for a guide to collecting. There are DVDs that offer basics of coin collecting overall, or for specific kinds of coins like early American coppers. Others have in depth looks at ancient coins and the history of American coins. Still others can teach you about grading of coins and how to spot counterfeit coins and bank notes.

You may not want to buy software for a beginner, because it would be overwhelming, especially if they don't know what they want to focus on yet. But there are DVDs specifically made for beginners, so those would be a great gift for a birthday or Christmas.

Either way, they are a great addition to coin collecting that makes it all just a little bit more interesting!

DVDs and Software to Aid Your Coin Collection

Compared to other collectible items, stamp collections only require inexpensive supplies and accessories. These tools are essential in securing, protecting, and preserving any kind of stamps. Each stamp should be handled and cared using these tools to ensure that stamps would last a long time.

A collector should exert the effort of availing these items. He should learn how to value the importance organizing and preserving the items he has collected. One true trait of a special collector is the way he preserves his collections by attending and being concerned with the safety of his stamps. It is important to preserve and secure the stamps because these items are only pieces of papers. They can easily be torn or may lose their designs when they are not properly attended.

Here are some basic tools and accessories that are essential in securing a preserving stamp collections.    

1.    Stamp tongs are similar to tweezers that are designed and specially made to hold, and pick up the stamps. It is important to handle the stamps with the use of tongs. These are used especially for those stamps that have higher value and have limited edition versions. They may come in stainless plastic or stainless steel. He may want to consider buying the plastic tongs, which are more affordable than the stainless steel tongs. He needs to make sure that the tongs do not have sharp or pointed edges.

2.  A watermark detector will allow a person to see the transparent prints and embossed markings that were intentionally made to value the price of the stamp. He may be able to detect those prints using watermark detectors and identify some forged stamps that are used for illegal purposes.

3.  Magnifying glasses are helpful in examining and determining what kind of inscriptions and special prints are featured on the stamp. It may also be used to identify the condition of the paper, if it is a special or ordinary stamp. It also spots small wrinkles like spots or printing errors on the paper. These spotted markings may influence the value of the stamp.

4.  Stamp hinges and mounts secure the stamp on the album. Stamp hinges are folded and rectangular in shapes, which are made from glassine paper wrapped with glue to hold firmly the stamps on the pages where they are pasted. These items have low prices and a person can purchase thousands of hinges for only a few dollars. On the other hand, stamp mounts also hold the stamps from the pages without altering the original glue of the stamp. The face of the stamp mount features a transparent plastic sleeves where the stamp will be placed. A collector can preserve and prolong the designs and marking in the stamp using these hinges and mounts.

5.  Stamp catalogs are helpful in identifying the current value of a particular stamp. These items are also responsible for giving reference and information regarding the stamp's value and additional information about the stamp. There are catalogs available in libraries if he may not able to purchase these items.

6.  Stamp albums are very essential to a stamp collector. Almost all stamps that are collected are placed in albums where they could be displayed and secured properly. A collector can organize and he may arrange his stamps according to the category or types they represent. He may choose what size of album he may purchase. There are albums that have large spaces and can accommodate thousands of stamps safely.

7.  There are tiny aligned holes in the stamp that are called perforations. The purpose of the perforation is to allocate the individual stamp from those collective stamps. The use of the perforation gauge is to measure the tiny holes by 2 centimeters in length from the blocks to the perforation. Most of the time, stamps can have similar features and prints but one thing that separate their similarity are the perforations. These perforations serve as the identifying factor that will distinguish the difference between two identical stamps.

These supplies and accessories are commonly used in stamp collecting. A collector can enjoy exhibiting and displaying his stamps on a well-organized album using some accessories that can make the stamp collection presentable and safely secured.

The Basic Tools of Stamp Collection

An ebook collection tends to reflect its owner. Some are scattered over the space of a hard drive with no rhyme or reason, and maybe a few are on a flash drive in the bottom of a purse somewhere or an a spare hard drive or CD-ROM. And some are meticulously organized with each book in it own folder, and the folders of ebooks in the same genre are in another folder, and all the folders of that general category are in yet another main folder.

Some ebook collections might fall somewhere in between. One folder for all the ebooks, with only one or two folders inside that to separate fiction from non-fiction or self-help from history, so the digital books are loosely organized but at least all in one place. If your ebook collection is scattered, you can organize it much more quickly than you ever imagined. And if your ebooks are already micro-organized, you won't have to mess with your system of organization.

You won't have to move your ebooks around at all, unless you want to. If you choose good book inventory software that also allows you to list ebooks, you can easily add ebooks to your catalog and never have to worry about reorganizing your hard drive. Sure the software will let you catalog your books, but that doesn't really organize them, does it?

It doesn't let you literally organize them, but it lets you virtually organize them. You can add labels of your choice and organize your ebook collection however you choose. You can sort by fiction and non-fiction, if you're a general category kind of person. You can hyper-sort by genres, level of violence, book length or ever by whether or not you like the cover graphic. How you organize your library is your decision.

But how's that going to help you find an ebook that's on a flash drive somewhere? That's probably the only thing that good book inventory software can't do. But you could make a label, let's call it Flash 1 for instance, and attach it to that ebook to indicate it's on flash drive 1 (assuming you have more than one). Or you could leave a comment with that ebook saying the same. Then when you browse through your ebook collection, your note or label will be there telling you where the ebook is. You can do that with your printed books, too, by leaving yourself a note that the book "Get Organized Yesterday" is in the box of knick-knacks under the chair that's covered with books.

Your ebook collection may not take up as much space or look as impressive as your printed book collection, but it's just as valuable to you .And ebooks are surprisingly easy to lose, as anyone who has ever accidentally deleted a folder or file will tell you. Ebook collection capable software, though, can help you keep better track of your digital books by letting you see the collection as a whole after you make a library.

The recent sensation that has gripped book readers is a series of novels by the writer Stephenie Meyer. The Twilight Collection By Stephenie Meyer

If you are a great lover of mysterious and fantasy literature, you ought to get your hands on the Twilight book collection. This particular collection contains 4 books published by Stephenie Meyer, 3 of which have been adapted into films and also DVDs.

The Twilight Book Series – Reasons To Read The Twilight Collection

Supplies For Coin Collection – Know Where To Get Them

The coin collection value is the most important aspect of coin collecting for most collectors. Many people regard coin collecting as an investment, so they need to be updated with market demands. In general, the valuation of a particular coin depends on its condition, mint rarity and denomination which is why collectors must build up their knowledge in these areas.

 There are many price guides which are used for referencing by coin collectors. "The Standard Catalog of World Coins" by Chester L. Krause and Clifford Mishler manage to cover coins starting from 1601, all the way down to the present time in five volumes. In the book, coins are identified and their prices are listed.  When trying to determine my coin collection value I have often referred to this publication and can personally recommend it as a good source of information.

A guide book for United States coins called the "Red Book" is published annually and is also a respected authority as a retail price guide. The "Blue Book" and the "Black Book" are also well established price guides to determine the value of a coin and thus the coin collection value. The "Coin Dealer Newsletter", more popularly known as "the Greysheet", is a price guide for coin dealers. The Numismatic News publishes prices for dealers, bidders and retailers. There are even online resources which maintain prices of coins like the "NumisMedia" website and a price guide for U.K. coins maintained by Tony Clayton can be found on his personal website.

As a rule rare coins are more expensive but rarity does not necessarily have to do with the age of the coin. Some Chinese coins which might be a thousand years old do not sell at high rates because they are common. The price of the coin also depends on the demand for the coin. If a lot of collectors want a particular coin, its price will get higher.

Collectors must also think about grade when establishing their coin collection value. Coin grading is a method of assessing the condition of the coin - the grade of the coin has a high determination of the eventual valuation of the coin. If a coin has been damaged its price will be reduced. Similarly, bullion also plays a role in determining value - the presence of precious metals like Gold and Silver increase the price of the coins as well. The aesthetical appeal of the coin has an effect on its price as well; it makes the coin more attractive for the collector. The American Numismatic Association has a 1-70 range for assessing coins, where 70 represents a faultless coin. The Numismatic Guarantee Corporation (NGC) and the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) are two organizations that go through the meticulous task of grading coins. Coins that have been certified by these reputable organizations have a higher value as their authenticity is more valid and reliable. ICG, Independent Coin Grading, and ANACS, handled by the American Numismatic Association are two other reliable grading services available.

Many people have accumulated tables of coin values which show coin collectors the values of particular coins – these tables can be built up over the course of a lifetime and can prove invaluable when establishing the coin collecting value; they give the collector the knowledge regarding which coins are worthy to be collected. There are also lists of coins worth collecting available with coins that are scarce ranked considerably higher. For example the 1909-S VDB Lincoln cent would be one of these coins. Items such as the legendary 1913 "V" nickel can be worth over 0,000. These hefty prices show why so many investors are willing to invest in coin collecting and expect high rates of return to their investments.
