If you're interested in beginning a coin collection there are a few things you should know first off. Whether you want to start collecting for investment purposes or just for fun, coin collecting can be very rewarding, and you don't have to be an expert.

1. When you look at most coins there will be a small letter near the date of production. This letter stands for where the coin was produced. In certain instances, this can make the coin extremely valuable, such as the 1909-S VDB Lincoln head penny. This penny from the year of the new design, features the initials of the designer, Vincent D. Brenner, and often sells for upwards of 00! The letters you may see are:

S-San Francisco

D-Denver

P-Philadelphia

W-West Point

2. But let's say you find a 1909-S VDB for 00 dollars. Why is it so expensive? Probably because of its condition. When a coin is "uncirculated," that means that it is in mint condition. Typically coins have wear and tear after being passed through hundreds and thousands of hands. Uncirculated coins were never damaged because they were never released to the public. There is a Mint State (MS) scale that ranges from 60 to 70. Any coin below a 60 is not uncirculated. Many coins are difficult to find in the 65-70 range, and because they are rare they tend to be very expensive.

3. Proof coins are made differently from normal uncirculated coins. Whereas a normal coin is made with a stamped "die" that pounds the front and back of the metal, proof coin dies are treated with special polish to give them a frosted look on the raised parts of the coin, and a more reflective mirror-clear look in the background of the coin. Furthermore, each coin is struck twice or more by the dies, so that each detail is more pronounced. Because of the extra time it takes to produce a proof coin, they are held to be more valuable than other coins. Proof coins are also rated on a 60-70 scale and are made for coin collectors.

4. Never clean your coins! Any abrasions or marks the coins have may be deepened if you try to use a tarnish remover. Real coin collecting involves finding the coins in their original condition, and if you try to improve that condition, you may wind up hurting the coin.

5. Once you start building a collection, you have to store it properly. There are plastic slabs for your more expensive coins, and coin folders for large scale collections, like pennies and nickels. In either case, storing your coins is the way to keep them safe and clean.

Coin collecting is rewarding and fun. You may see the value of your coins eventually skyrocket, or in the meanwhile, you may stumble upon certain coins that you would have overlooked once before. And you don't need to spend a lot of money to have a nice collection; all it takes is an interest and a desire to be a numismatist (that's Latin, for coin collector). So what are you waiting for? Coin collecting is a very rewarding experience, especially as your collection and knowledge begins to grow. Most people see the act of coin collecting as just needing coins and an album, but there are other thing that can supplement your collection and make it an even more fulfilling experience.

Coin albums are a great way to keep all of your physical coins together, but sometimes keeping track of what you do and don't have can be a hard task. That is where coin collecting software comes in to play. Some software, like the Coin Collector's Assistant, will keep you organized. It has a complete coin database with pictures and a ton of customization. These kinds of software are comprehensive and incredibly important for the serious collector.

Being able to print out reports and lists of what you are looking for are great as well, especially when you may be searching for coins in person at various locations. It's also important to remember to always back up your information, just in case anything can happen. Printing out and filing reports every so often is a great way to make sure you have a hard copy.

Other software available include catalogs of obsolete coins and bank notes that are easily search-able. They don't always have a way to track your own collection, but if you are already doing that by hand or another way these are great just to have a full complete list of the rarer finds.

DVDs are a great option as well for those who are interested in the history of coins or for a guide to collecting. Whether you’re an experience coin collector or you are just starting you already know that there is nothing more exciting than finding an extremely valuable coin to add to your collection. Of course if you are just starting you may not be aware that there are different values to be found in coins. That’s why there are some guidelines to determine the value of a coin. Following these guidelines will help you evaluate the coin collecting value of your coins or collection.

Of course each type of coins is different so it is only normal that they have different value. The first thing to do would be to have an expert evaluating your coin collecting value. I would even go further by having multiple expert conducting coin appraisals on your collection. The expert or coin dealers have the knowledge to help you find you coin collecting value. You may even get lucky and find an expert who is more than willing to share is knowledge with you to further you education on the various coin collecting value grades and prices.

Why Coin and Stamp Collecting is So Popular

Coin collecting is very fascinating; especially if you happen to be an American and are interested in collecting penny coins because there are a few very interesting such coins available that will make your collection stand out. As far as collecting penny coins goes, the Lincoln head penny is probably the one penny coin that is collected by every coin collector.

Minted in 1909

This penny was first minted in the year 1909 and has since been a part of every collection of penny coins. However, in the years when the Second World War was underway this penny was made out of zinc and not its usual copper, and in fact the number of such coins that were made from copper was very few and those that were made from copper were only made in the year 1943.

The Lincoln head penny is certainly an exceptional option in regard to collecting penny coins and today it is very valuable as well. Another kind of penny that should be part of every serious coin collection is the penny that preceded the Lincoln penny. First off, there are numerous options as far as type of coins is concerned though for those that is interested only in collecting penny coins they need to try and only specialize in pennies.

Also, the best place to start your collecting penny coins is to look at hobby stores where there are special sections dealing with coins and there you can buy coin folders in which you can store your collection. In addition, you should buy books to become more educated about type of pennies, especially their grading and current values.

Finally, you need to be armed with a good magnifying glass and in addition you need to also understand how pennies are graded and valued so that you know a good coin collecting penny when you see one and are not fooled by claims and counter-claims. When it concerns coin collecting wheat pennies, these come to approximately one hundred and forty-eight per pound.

Of course, it is also necessary that you look at the quality of the coin collecting penny before buying it and if you have a little extra money then it is a good idea to go for pennies that are of a higher grade and which have more value as these will ensure that your collection of pennies will stand out and the pennies too will also appreciate over time.

A Few Leads On Succeeding With The Coin Collecting Penny

Coin collecting is a fantastic hobby to have, but like many hobbies, it can be a little hard to get started. There are varying levels of coin collecting and you need to make sure you know which level you identify with. They are the same precautions you would take if you were learning to paint. You wouldn't go out and spend hundreds of dollars on professional painting tools and supplies if you're really not at that skill or interest level.

Therefore, if you are starting a coin collection for the first time, you would need different supplies than the veteran collector who has been collecting for decades. Coin collecting can be an expensive hobby depending on what level of collector you are interested in becoming, so it's best to be realistic when you think about what supplies you need. Here is a little guide to help you decide where you stand, and what the best option is for you and your budget.

Young Collector or Low-Budget:

For young collectors or those without an exorbitant amount of money to spend on coin collecting, you don't need to go all out to get started. All you need to have a successful collection is an interest in the hobby, a keen-eye for good coins, and a box to put your finds in. If you want to protect you coins from banging around and getting dull and scratched, put them in an envelope inside of the box. Many kids starting out don't have the attention span or the funds to maintain dansco coin albums, so it's best to start off small and the interest and professionalism will grow with the individual.

Teen Collector or Low/Medium Budget:

If you are in the mid-level of collecting or just want the step up from the plain-box, you may want to consider something that holds each individual coin and displays it attractively. Great coin holders are coin envelopes or sleeves with slots for each coin. Coin folders are also a viable alternative. They aren't quite as serious and professional looking as a leather coin album which can be an attractive attribute for a mid-level collector, as it can be less intimidating. Also, at this level of coin collecting, you may want to consider buying a good coin identification book. These can be great tools for helping you get pricing information on coins. If you're not able to purchase a book, the library could be a free substitute.

Adult Collector or Moderate Budget:

If you are at this level, your interest in coin collecting is higher than the average individual's, but budget is still a bit of a limit for you. It is still best to start gradual and build your coin supplies as you see fit. Starting off on the simple collecting foot is always smart. By not investing a great deal of money in the beginning, you are potentially saving yourself a fortune if you loose interest in the hobby or feel that you don't have enough time or energy to keep up with it. However, if you feel you are dedicated to the hobby and are willing to keep up with a professional type of album, you should go for it. Dansco coin albums are a really elegant choice, and preserve your collection for generations to come.

Tips To Begin Old Coin Collecting

Why do some folks dislike the winter time with such a hatred? Is it the snow, the cold, the slippery sidewalks, or is it something else they truly hate, and that is getting the winter blues because they always think there's nothing to do. I have always loved the winter time, from when I was a kid to my present age, I don't care much for the cost of the rising heat bill each year, but as far as the beauty of the winter scenery, I think it's wonderful, truly a gift from God.

When you find yourself with nothing to do during them cold winter months, why not take up a great hobby like coin collecting, it's not only fun, it's also a great way to shake the winter blues. Now, since you are new or a beginner to coin collecting, and this is going to be done as a hobby to help shake the winter blues, I will be talking about the basics and how to enjoy coin collecting for very little money. The first thing to do, is to think about what types of coins you want to start collecting.

One of the nicest and cheapest ways to start collecting coins is by buying a coin folder, the ones that have pre-cut holes for the coins, you simply place the appropriate coin into it's respected slot or position in the album. You should start with a type of coin that is easy to find, and not super expensive to buy when it comes to the scarcer ones. I started by collecting Lincoln pennies, they were first minted or made in 1909 and are still made today, next I started collecting Jefferson Nickels.

The best thing about collecting pennies or nickels, or dimes is that, you can start filling in them empty spots in your folders, today at no cost. The easiest method to start collecting your coins is to search through your jars of change at home, and by checking the change in your pockets at the end of the day. The next way to acquire some more coins for your folders is to buy rolls from banks, then replace the coins you removed, with the change in your jars, turn these rolls in for more coins at another bank, and keep repeating the process.

After awhile you will be getting down to where you will not be able to find the coins you need to complete your folders with, in your change or from banks, because of their age and rarity. You may then want to join an online coin club, there are many reputable ones that offer coins on an approval service. They will send you certain coins once a month, and you simply select the ones you want to buy and keep, and the ones you don't want you just mail back to the company. What makes these monthly approval services great is, you can select the types of coins you wish to receive monthly, and the price you are willing to spend.

I still find wheat pennies and silver war nickels, and many pre 1960 nickels, and sometimes a silver coin in pocket change. A few years back, I was at a local store and got some change back, I noticed two of the quarters I received looked kind of white in color, examining them closely after I got back home, I discovered they were both pre 1964 silver Washington quarters. I figured somebody must of needed money to buy some cigarettes or milk or something, and must of used some of their old coins, I was just lucky enough to had been there at the right time and place to get them in my change.

After collecting coins for fun over the years, I now have almost every Lincoln cent that was made from 1909 to present, and I have every Jefferson nickel from the first one that was made in 1938 to present, and I have a nice sized wooden chest full of miscellaneous U.S. coins, including silver dollars, mercury dimes, buffalo nickels, Large Cents and many more unique and rare coins. I figure the coins will make a nice gift someday, something to leave to my daughter or as a gift for my Grandchildren. The next time, you find yourself with nothing to do in the winter, starting looking through your change, and enjoy the wonderful hobby of coin collecting, it's a great way to help shake the winter blues.
