Comic Book Conventions

An internationally known comic book convention is held in San Diego, CA and is known as Comic Con or as Comic Con International: San Diego. It is a four day convention that has been going on since the 1970s when Shel Dorf founded it. There are two other conventions held annually by the same organization but are in San Francisco, WonderCon and the Alternative Press Expo.

The conventions are held to showcase comic books. In addition, the convention also features science fiction, fantasy, television, and film. Because the convention has gained momentum over the years, the convention has broadened its feature topics. At the convention you will also learn about fantasy novels, anime, horror, collectible card games, webcomics, video games, and manga. On average at the San Diego Comic Con there are 125,000 attendees. If you are a part of these industries, you can have the chance to win the Inkpot Award.

At the convention you will participate, see, and hear different panels, workshops, and seminars. All of which are held by comic book professionals. Comic con is held in a large venue because they need a lot of floor space for everything that is offered at the convention. There are a lot of exhibits to see about comic books, TV networks, and media production companies. Comic book collectors show off their prized possession comic books, and merchants are there to sell them as well. After buying a comic book, or bringing your own, you can get them signed. Comic Con has what they call Artists’ Alley set up. Different comic artists and writers are lined up and willing to autograph their comic books.

This summer the Comic Con convention is being held July 23-26. There is a preview night that will take place on July 22 at the San Diego Convention Center. However, if you don’t have your tickets already, you won’t be able to go. The convention has already sold out. The first time the convention sold out was last year, 2008. The convention has come a long way since its debut 40 years ago. The first convention was held at the U.S. Grant Hotel, in San Diego, and was only a one day event. The first convention was held as a test to see if people would be interest in later conventions. They used the event to raise funds for San Diego Comic Con. The first show was a hit and set the ground work for the next 40 years.

Drawing Comic Book Pages Part I: Thumbnails, and Pencils Versions

Drawing a comic book page like the ones in super hero comic books can be fun but it's no game.

Readers can see and read a full colored page in 30 seconds, but it takes an artist 8 to 16 hours (or more) to produce it.

Why?

Because most professional comic book artists go through five stages to complete a full comic book page of high quality. Some of those stages require much more than an hour to complete. Stages are:

1) Thumbnails creation

2) Pencils version

3) Inked version

4) Colored version

5) Lettered version

Note: Usually, it is not one but several artists who produce a single comic book page. This is because each artist specializes in a particular stage. The end result is often better when produced by a team. And working this way also speeds up the process.

Let's describe the first two stages in this article:

1) Thumbnails creation

After reading the script (which besides the dialogs and captions may include specific descriptions and instructions from the writer), the artist spends some time imagining how the page should look so it can tell the story well (without the need of words), and it looks good and entertaining.

When the artist is done playing around with variations of the panels and the page in his (or her) mind, the artist grabs a piece of paper (usually a Letter or A4 size, blank sheet of computer printer paper), and starts sketching one or more versions of the page (often using an HB  pencil) at a very small scale.

The size of these small (and sketchy) pages may vary but they are approximately 2 by 3 inches each (5 x 7 cm). Since they're much smaller than the final pages, they are known as thumbnails.

This stage is very important because thumbnails are a practical, quick and effective way to define the best layout for a page (amount of panels and their shape) and where to place the main items (like characters, large props, backgrounds, etc.) Important facial expressions, action lines and perspective are also included in them.

If you try doing this on a full size board and make a gross mistake, you will have to toss that board and start over. Thumbnails prevent that because you can do about six of them in a very inexpensive sheet, to try things out until you find what works.

Note: Artists seldom care for or keep their thumbnails and toss them away.

One case doing thumbnails is mandatory is when writers or editors request the artist to do them to get their approval before drawing the final pages.

So, if you're serious about drawing comics, I suggest you always draw one or more thumbnails of your pages until you are totally satisfied with them to use as reference for the final, full size page.

Note: Thumbnails are drawn quickly and loose so they usually look very "energetic." The challenge is to produce a final page that is as energetic (or more) than its thumbnail. Unfortunately this is not always the case, sometimes because reference like photographs or 3D images is overused for poses or expressions when creating the final page, making it look static or dull.

2) Pencils Version

After the thumbnail is done (and approved if required), the artist grabs a white board that is 11 by 17 inches to draw the final page using a pencil, and the thumbnail as reference.

Note: If you are used to the metric system, 11 by 17 inches is a bit smaller than 30 x 45 cm. Comparing it to standard sizes, it is near the size of an A3 size paper.

So that's a big board. Then... Wait!

Comic books are MUCH smaller than that. Regular super hero comic books are about 6.5 by 10 inches (16 x 20 cm.)

So... Why do artists draw the final page at such a big scale?

Because it's easier to draw better at a larger scale.

In my case, I scotch an 11 by 17 inches (or A3) white board to the drawing table and using a light blue pencil, draw a 10 by 15 inches rectangle in the center (when the board doesn't already have such a rectangle.) That area is where the page is drawn.

Still using the light blue pencil, and the thumbnail as reference, I draw in a somewhat sketchy way, the entire page (including the panel borders) inside that 10 by 15 inches area. I do add details, and some of the final pencils but the overall drawing is still sketchy. This process can take an hour or so depending on the complexity of the page.

Then, I take an HB pencil and draw the entire page AGAIN, on top of the light blue pencil, but this time paying extra attention to detail, making the drawing look final. This process always takes more time than the "light blue pencil" step.

Why use a light blue pencil? And why draw the page twice?

The light blue pencil is used to draw the foundation over which the final artwork is drawn using the regular pencil.

And it is light blue (a different color than gray) to be able to erase it easily using image editing software (like Photoshop) after the page is scanned to the computer.

So when using this technique, the original artwork (the actual board that was drawn by the artist), has both light blue and regular gray pencil traces.

But the digitalized version of the page (stored in the computer with a scanner) which is later used in the following stages, has only the gray (and final) pencil traces.

This is a great technique to produce better artwork because the artist has two chances to make the drawing look just right. I suggest you to use it.

Note: Because some collectors don't like artwork that mixes light blue and gray pencils or because some artists prefer to produce very clean pencil pages, there is an alternative to the light blue pencils technique. It requires two boards and a lightbox (a special table that is used to trace drawings.) One board is used to do the sketchy drawing, and the other to do the final, "clean" drawing which is drawn on the lightbox, over and tracing the first and sketchy drawing.)

When the pencils stage is over, a great deal of the final comic book page is done. That's why the penciler (the artist who does the pencils version) is considered by most as important as the writer, and his (or her) name is shown conspicuously in the credits.

But the rest of the stages, inking, coloring and lettering, are also important, even essential to complete a comic book page.

So, we are at what, 2 to 4 hours of work so far?

The name says "comic" but this is serious business. Drawing comics is a lot of work. But it's also very creative, and fun work to do

"Comic Book News" Is A Relative Term

Over the annals of time there have been people to report on the events that occur in life. The same can be said in the world of comics where the term "comic book news" is readily applied, though is rarely accurate. Much like tabloid news, comic book news is mostly comprised of hype and interviews promoting products.

Take a publication like Wizard Magazine that used to be a fun and credible source of comic book news prior to the widespread use of the internet with comic book news sites cropping up by the dozens. Once reporting hard to find tidbits of information for the curious fan out of touch with the behind the scenes world of comics, Wizard was a bastion of comic book news to the uninformed. Now, however, always a step behind and hardly ever providing any real reporting, according to many, Wizard is highly considered nothing more than an 80-page commercial for products from the biggest comic companies in the industry.

Many comic book news websites are the same, rarely reporting any hard-hitting stories or asking the tough questions in interviews, they cater to the professionals and big companies that in kind provide them with exclusive previews and the like that other sites aren't able to acquire. The two current biggest comic book news websites, Newsarama.com and ComicBookResources.com have such deals and often publish a lot of fluff. That's not to say those sites, which are beloved by many a comic fan, do not publish newsworthy content as well, it's just a little harder to find.

The fact is many comic and non-comic fans scoff at the term "comic book news" passing it off and not considering it real journalism. And that's an accurate thought pattern when considering some so-called comic book news out there. But it's certainly not the case in totality. There are, in fact, many real journalists in comic book news that write and publish informative, and sometimes controversial reports and articles on events in comics, about creators, and about publishers.

Therefore, the term "comic book news" is a relative term depending on who you ask and what you read. But rest assured, you can find real stories that would be worthy of any credible publication and would certainly be deemed newsworthy. But like the 'real world', you have to sift through all the garbage (ie, tabloids, or fluff) to find the real gems in comic book news.

BLADE COMIC BOOK MOVIES AND OTHER MEDIA

Created by Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan in 1973, the first Blade comic book appearance as a supporting character in The Tomb of Dracula #10 by Marvel Comics.  Over the years, Blade appeared in back-up stories and made guest appearances, but it wasn't until the mid 90s when the first Blade comic book came out.  From there, Blade gained popularity and eventually branched out into other forms of media.

In 1998, the first Blade comic book adaptation to the big screen was released.  Starring Wesley Snipes as the Daywalker, and Kris Kristofferson as Whistler, the film centered around Blade wanting to avenge the death of his mother by vampires.  Meanwhile, the pure blood vampires have gone to war with those that have been turned from humans.  As the film progresses Blade learns that his mother has been turned, and that it was the head vampire, Frost, that bit her while she was pregnant, which is why Blade has the symptoms of vampires, but none of the weaknesses.  The film was loosely based on the Blade comic book stories, though chiefly the latter ones, and is sometimes thought of as the film that started the comic movie revolution as it predated the first Spider-Man film.

Blade II, the sequel to the first film, also loosely based on the Blade comic book, came out in 2002 following the success of other comic related films like Spider-Man and X-Men.  In this film there is a new breed of vampires called Reapers that feeds on both humans and vampires thanks to an irresistible and enhanced bloodlust.  Those that survive the attacks of the Reapers become Reapers themselves.  To stop the Reapers, Blade is forced to team up with the regular vampires, the Bloodpack of the Shadow Council as neither alone could defeat them.  Eventually, of course, the Bloodpack betray him and he has to defeat them all on his own.  Luckily he finally learns that ultraviolet light kills the Reapers.  This particular Blade comic book film is the most popular of the three and did the best at the box office of the three as well.

The third Blade comic book film was Blade: Trinity, and was released in 2004.  The vampires concoct a plan to have Blade blamed for killing humans, and they are successful at doing so.  Now on the run from the FBI, Blade must unite with the Nightstalkers, a group of human vampire hunters led by Whistler's daughter, and they go on the hunt for the original vampire Drake, aka Dracula.

The future of the Blade comic book films is uncertain now after a lawsuit filed by Snipes, and now that Snipes is serving a prison term for federal income tax crimes.

In other media, two video games based on the first two Blade comic book films were released for the Playstation and XBox platforms.  And a short-lived television series based on the Blade comic book movies was shown on Spike in 2006.

There are thousands of comic book characters in existence from past to present. Many are well known while the majority are more obscure to the general public. And while top ten lists are generally subjective and based on opinion, there are certain comic book characters that will be discussed in this article that are worthy of that distinction by most standards. These are in random order.

Superman - There absolutely cannot be a top ten list of comic book characters without the Man of Steel. He's one of the first (arguably THE first) superhero to ever grace the four-color world, and thus his history is one of the richest. He's also one of the most popular in both comics and worldwide as viewed by the general public. He represents truth, justice, righteousness and morality. And while many find it hard to relate to him, those same people look up to his characteristics and admire his altruistic spirit.

Batman - Not quite so altruistic, but every bit as popular and loved is the Dark Knight. He may not always do the right thing, or do it the right way, but his motives are always pure, and his intent is always clear. He's a thinking man's hero, but he's also a warrior's hero. He's well rounded and complete, and a little bit gritty, and that's why we like him.

Spider-Man - The boy next door; the everyman; the geeky kid a great majority of us can relate to who overcomes the odds and becomes something great. Spider-Man gives us hope that we can achieve that same greatness in our own special ways. He truly is a standard bearer and a true hero to the core, always trying to do the right thing, but many times messing it up horribly, thus proving he's still human, and thus endearing him more and more to our hearts.

Lex Luthor - The arch-nemesis of the 'Blue Boyscout', Superman, Lex Luthor is all kinds of evil wrapped up in money and a well pressed, expensive suit. He's diabolically clever and vicious, and he never lets Supes sleep on the job. Cementing his legacy as one of the greatest villains of all time, Luthor wins our allegiance for the depth of his character and his driven purpose.

Captain America - Maybe not as popular in modern times as he was in the days of World War II when he first appeared on the comic scene, but still a symbol of America and classic comics from the Golden and Silver ages. Captain America is displaced and so he views the world a bit differently than the rest of us. He sees things the way they should be in his mind, which isn't always the most popular point of view. He's often portrayed as a boy scout, but truthfully he's much deeper than that, and that's where the appeal lies.

Wolverine - Overused or not, Logan is one of the most popular comic book characters in existence today. When he first burst onto the scene in the revitalized X-Men he quickly gained an everlasting fan base because of the difference he brought to the table. He's not your typical do-gooder hero, though he always does fight for the right causes. He's temperamental, at times insecure, rude, crude and unpredictable. He's a loner with a heart of gold and a penchant for violence. He's an anti-hero who takes no crap, but at the same time he deeply cares about those he surrounds himself with. And it's those complexities that make him stand out in our minds.

Wonder Woman - The first widely received female superhero, Wonder Woman is by far the most popular female comic book character to date. She comes from a world where women are dominant, which gained her popularity early on in the women's liberation movement. She stands head-to-head and toe-to-toe with any male superhero, and she shows them up oftentimes. She's a strong, beautiful, intelligent and yet still feminine heroine with a costume that has become more than iconic.

The Joker - The thorn in Batman's side rightly deserves a place on this list for his epic battles with the 'Caped Crusader'. Of all comic book characters in the superhero realm, there is none quite like the Joker. He's maniacal, insane, and ruthless, yet charming, smooth and debonair at the same time. He's a mass murderer and a child killer, and he's obsessed with Batman. He's just too crazy not to love!

The Flash - If underoos and t-shirts are any indication, The Flash is one of the most noticeable and popular iconic comic book characters of all time. He's a fan-favorite of comic readers and non-comic fans alike. He's known worldwide and his trademark red costume with the white circle and yellow lightning bolt are instantly recognized. But more than appearance, it's his powers and his wit that land him on this list. He's one of the original comic relief superheroes in the genre with his sarcastic and humorous banter that rivals that of Spider-Man. And who doesn't love super speed powers? He's the best at what he does.

The Incredible Hulk - Mr. Green Genes himself has to make this list merely for his iconic status in the world of comics and beyond. He's a classic hero that has gained notoriety through comics, television and film. And with the popularity of the second Hulk film that just released, his star will only continue to rise. Couple that with the massive success of Planet Hulk and the Incredible one is a force to be reckoned with. Whether it’s his intense power, or the dynamic between that power and the weak, but intelligent alter-ego Bruce Banner, we love him no matter what.
