California state law prohibits carrying concealed dirks or daggers (which includes every fixed blade knife, or a folding knife locked in the open position), and prohibits the possession of switchblades and butterfly knives with blades 2" or more in length. (PC 653k, 12020.) If the knife you are talking about is not a switchblade, then it can be lawfully carried (closed) any way you want to under State law. There are also laws prohibiting the possession of knives in some locations, such as schools and public buildings. There also may be an applicable local ordinance. While I personally believe that such local ordinances are unenforceable, that won't prevent your arrest, so you should check whether there are any applicable local (city or county) laws.
