Whats the benefits of having a serrated edge knife, or a straight edge?

Im looking to buy a nice knife, but you have the option of having it straight edge, serrated edge, or a combo. I was wondering the uses of each choice, and what would be better for what im using it for. Please any info will help...

Serrated is mostly for cutting rope in a hurry. it is difficult to sharpen. A straight blade is much more versatile and easy to sharpen. I prefer a survival type knife which has both serrated and straight. The straight edge is the main cutting edge, and the backside is serrated.
