This a cloth emblem sewn onto the opening of the jacket.
I think you are referring to the Iron Cross (2nd class).
This was awarded for bravery in combat or achievemnt in a combat setting. While an actual metal cross was part of the decoration the Iron Cross 2nd class was often worn with just the ribbon (black, red, and white) through a buttonhole in the tunic.
