Decades of experience have gone into writing the current Uniform Plumbing Code. It is a breathing compilation of rules and good plumbing practices that extends from which materials to use for certain applications to the prescribed method for installation. That a lot of information for one sentence and still does not capture the depth of what the Uniform Plumbing Code really is.
The Uniform Plumbing Code serves several purposes, the main one being to direct plumbing construction projects toward completion in a safe and hygienic way. It is standardization, but with a goal of public safety.
What's The Code?
The Uniform Plumbing Code is in effect a rule book, containing the legislated guidelines and the prescribed guidelines for good plumbing. This includes sections related to potable water – that which is consumed by humans – and that involves many areas in and of itself. Additionally, water for general home use and commercial use comes under the Uniform Plumbing Code.
Ultimately it is the water quality that is being protected, but the Uniform Plumbing Code itself deals more with the pipes that carry the water. In a sense it is about maintaining the purity of the water along its journey, everywhere it is handled, processed or distributed – from storage to pumping to distribution to coming out the faucet.
The Uniform Plumbing Code keeps growing with each passing year. As old products are grandfathered out and new ones take their place, even the terminology has undergone changes. Uniform and universal are not always the same.
Ask A Plumber
The Uniform Plumbing Code can be confusing to an untrained reader. I often ask my plumber friend for an interpretation. He says "What's your scenario?" and after I've described the situation, I keep mum and await his suggestion. I've learned that I should not advise the plumber how to interpret the Uniform Plumbing Code.
Make Your Inspector A Friend
Another great source of Uniform Plumbing Code information is the local planning office, and specifically your local building inspector. Quite often the inspector will answer questions over the phone that help in the design and timely completion of plumbing projects and major installations where plumbing plays a role.
As in other spheres of life, the building inspector, plumber and the home or business owner are partners in a larger picture. We take clean water for granted, partly because the Uniform Plumbing Code is on duty!
