What's a good reference book for automotive repair and maintenance?
What's a good reference book for automotive repair, maintenance, and tuning. I'm trying to learn all I can about cars and need a good place to start. I'm hoping to get to the point where I can do mods and performance tuning one day (not faggot rice cans, I mean American V8 classics and modern muscle cars).
Check out the Chilton line of automotive repair manuals. They're pretty much industry standard, though there are a few other ones out there.
Now a day, car hire is quite common in most of the European countries, If you are going to car hire in London, you need not shell-out huge sums, there are plenty of deals available on internet, you need to look around carefully to get the right deal at the right time. But, don't get trapped in false promises with fine print. Book from the most reputable, or from a reference, which proves the credentials of the company, and may be because of the reference you may get some reference discount.
Few tips to get a good deal:
Book from popular van or car Rental Company:
Car rental agencies operate complex fleet management systems to arrange right vehicles at the right time. But, sometime, they may fail to keep their promise, but to retain the customer; they may offer you an upgrade at no cost. As they are large group, they will be having bigger fleet and most of the time, smaller and cheaper ones get booked on the first available opportunity. But expensive or luxury vehicles won't in much demand.
Confirm your booking well in advance:
Based on the season and demand forecasting the Car Rental agencies know in advance, what kind of demand, that they have to fulfill, based on these parameters, they do offer cheapest rates and more perks to woo the commuters. So, book as early as possible.
Collection and return times:
Most of the rental agencies, have daily rates, on a 24hour basis, even though you return at 25th hour, they will bill you for an extra day. It goes like this you pick up a vehicle at 4 p.m. and bring it back 5 p.m. the following day, then you has to pay for 2 days. It is advisable, to return the vehicle before your 24 hour time slot, preferably, at 23 hours or so, that one hour window to avoid any unforeseen situations, traffic jams, last minute rush, etc., the value for this hour is equals to the day two billing.
Bargain a better deal:
If you can finalize your travel plans well ahead of time, then try to book in advance, as the travel agencies won't like to wait till the last minutes, they may be offering best possible deals. If it is a non-peak time, then you may get more benefit. Renting in peak winter or after the Christmas are the best examples. It doesn't make any sense for the Car Rental agencies to keep their vehicles ideal in Garage, they would rather let you for very cheap price.
Discounts:
Discount code is the sure way to get the best deals, so keep look for the discount codes, not only in peak periods, like Christmas, Ester and Winter / Summer, always check the terms of the discount codes, most of the times, they do extend the discount period.
Online Booking:
Car rental agencies would like to reduce their overhead, and Internet is the god-sent opportunity. You can expect discounts from anywhere 5-25% on average, sometime, it may be more, so where possible, always book online.
