where did the term " Petty Officer" come from?

This is a navy term.

i can't give you a textbook answer, but heres my take on it. ok, you have your officers. a petty officer is a high ranking enlistee with alot of senority. in the eyes of their superiors they will never be as good and technically have as much authoriity as officers, but theyre the best for enlisted, so they tack on petty(degrading, really) to it. i think its disrespectful bullshit, but the rules are old.
