Basic Guide To Comic Book Collecting

Even with the emergence of popular entertainment outlets such as the internet and satellite television, comic books have maintained an impressive market share of consumer spending. There simply is no replacement for the unique way a comic can present a story and engage its readers. Because of this, comic book collecting has also grown in recent years with a new generation of readers enjoying this rewarding hobby.

For collectors who are just beginning, there are a couple of different approaches to take to the hobby. Some people are simply fans of a particular hero or publisher. They purchase comics for their own entertainment and don't concern themselves much with the after-market value of the publication. Other collectors concentrate on acquiring limited edition or rare comics for the sake of achieving a return on their investment. This form of collecting usually requires an advanced knowledge of the market as well as the necessary funds to make large purchases.

There are five distinct eras of comic book memorabilia. The Platinum Age represent the oldest time period, dating between the 1800's and 1937. The Golden Age covers the years of 1938 to 1955. Silver Age comic books are dated between 1956 and 1969, and the Bronze Age occurred between 1970 and 1979. The Modern Age includes everything that was produced from 1980 through today. Each time period is unique and distinctive in the way the publications were written, produced, and distributed. Obviously the older periods offer the most valuable items, but there are still plenty of rare and limited comics to be found in the Modern Age.

Today's collectors will find a multitude of outlets to help them add to their collection. The internet alone has increased the accessibility of hard-to-find comics to collectors all over the world. eBay, Craigslist, and online comic book stores make finding exactly what you want as simple as clicking a mouse. While these outlets are probably the most popular markets for collectors, there is still plenty of demand for local comic book shows and stores. Of course newsstands and bookstores remain the best source for the latest publications. Ideally, the savvy collector will be comfortable with using all of the outlets mentioned here. You simply never know where you might uncover the next hidden gem to add to your collection.

Beyond these basics of comic book collecting, there are other intricacies to learn for the new collector. For instance, collectable comic books are often graded to measure their condition in a uniform manner. This is done by a professional third-party company which will seal the comic in a protective sleeve to preserve its integrity. New collectors will need to become familiar with this process if they plan on investing in rare comics. Other essential tools include comic price guides and market sales reports which help to asses the value of a particular piece.

Collecting comic books has been an entertaining hobby for many decades, and it does not appear to be slowing down anytime soon. Stamp Collection - Best Way to Get Started

As I have already narrated in my blogs my hobby of Stamp Collection started more as of a compulsion than a hobby. Perhaps if I was not in the circumstances that I was in I would never have taken it on. My father who died quite suddenly in an accident had a huge collection which I had never taken interest in till then or for that matter till about 25 years later. After his demise we just stored all of it in 3 cupboards and just got on with our lives.

One thing was that we always knew how close this collection was to his heart and we never wanted to dispose it off just to any collector. Many of his collector friends offered to evaluate the collection and get us the best price, but we never found it in our hearts to have someone come close to it. Now I have children of my own and was wanting to remodel the house that we noticed the space being occupied by these stamps. This got me a bit interested in trying to find out the value of these. I tried talking to a lot of known collectors. Some were not interested and others just wanted to take it for a knocked down price. I was wanting to try and find out the actual value and maybe a way to document the entire collection.

What I have found out is that it is very difficult to get into and evaluate someone else' collection especially if he is not around. Stamp collecting is not like any other collections like coins, paintings or anything else. Coins will generally be collected and filed country wise, paintings collected by the painter wise, etc. The stamp collection will always have a personality - YOURS. Stamps can be collected country wise, interest wise, topic wise, any way on earth. I have seen collections on topics like women, women sitting, elephant in jungle, presidents, etc. I have even seen a collector collecting all the stamps issued worldwide in his year of birth.

What does this tell you ? Well you should know a collection before you can do anything with it. If you do not know the collection you will just have to rely on others to help you out. So I did the best thing. I started my own collection out of his. How ? Here is how.

Luckily I found a few empty stamp albums, hinges, flat tweezers and a magnifying glass. Believe me if you want to be a collector and love your stamps these are absolutely essential. You can find these at any stamp shop in your locality or the nearest post office can guide you to one. Choose a topic for your album have at least 3 or 4 to start with. These topics can change as you progress. In my case I started out with India as a topic but soon changed it to India - Post Independence. Now I also have an album started on Australia, UK & USA. I am wanting to start a collection on Aircraft on Stamps. Well I think the topic really depends on what you have available initially but once the interest develops that is the time that you really pick a topic of your choice. That is the time you really become a collector.

25 Years of Doll Collecting

The past 25 years have seen tremendous changes in the collectible doll industry. Until that time, collectors only had antique dolls, or newer children’s dolls to add to their collections. As there were relatively few “new collectibles” to purchase, the market on these “played with dolls” and antiques was vibrant and exciting.

There were many doll shows scattered all over the country, and a visit to one would find three types of dolls available, antique dolls, rescued discarded play dolls, and booths featuring doll makers wares. Doll makers were many, with their work ranging from dreadful to stunning.

Flea markets also found doll sellers, usually of the “discarded child doll type”, and many collectors searched regularly for collectible dolls. At the time, dolls being grabbed up were from the Chatty Cathy family, Chrissie and Velvet family, Patti Playpal types , Vogue, and of course Barbie.

With the emergence of the “Ashton Drake Gallery” dolls, followed by many mass produced porcelain dolls by many other companies, all offering limited editions, artist renderings and much media advertising, many collectors changed direction and began to purchase these new dolls.

This new collector market was huge for a number of years. People scrambled to complete sets of dolls and to find dolls by certain doll artists. The market on older vinyl “designed for play dolls” softened considerably during this period.

Home based porcelain doll studios, where you could take classes teaching you how to make your own dolls, also became very popular during this time.

A quarter of a century later, many dolls that were so popular, have now come onto the secondary market. Due to the market being so flooded at the time of production, and so many collectors jumping onto the bandwagon, the secondary market is now flooded with these dolls. The value on many has plummeted as a result, particularly Ashton Drake Dolls.

Other collectible porcelain dolls that were mass produced are for the most part worth only a fraction of what was paid for them initially. The biggest reason for this is the fact that these dolls are still being produced, the quality has improved a great deal, and the prices have gone down. What reason would anyone have for purchasing an older one!

The market on genuine antique dolls continues to be strong, and investments made seem to be sound. As the years pass, it is harder and harder to find antique dolls unless they are coming directly from another collector’s private collection. This keeps the prices high. Unlike modern dolls, there are only so many antiques to go around!

It is a mistaken belief to regard Stamp Collecting as only Children Hobby.It may interest you to learn that participation at certain stages of the hobby are very much beyond the capacities of children as would their participation in test cricket matches etc.

Stamp Collecting or Philately is the study of stamps, their production. It has developed into two broad groups - those who collect and study stamps and those who collect stamps as souvenirs.

A new collector may not be sure of what kind of stamps to collect. It is however advisable that he should acquire and study as many different stamps as he can because the experience gained will help him to grasp the fundamentals of the subject.

Later on, he can decide upon concentrating on a single country's issues or those of a group. To engage in this hobby, physical condition is of no vital importance as very little actual physical energy is required to carry it on and money does not always determine the value of a collection to its owner.

Often no money at all is involved except perhaps for an album and stamp collecting accessories. A stamp off a letter from a foreign country can be of as much value to a true collector as a rare and high-priced stamp might be to on me who can spend hundreds of us$ to indulge in his hobby.

Just like any other hobby, the real value of a collection comes from the use made of it by its owner. A small collection of a few hundred common stamps may give a greater thrill out of having such a collection than would a rich man who has spent  hundreds of us$ merely to have a 'Display Collection..

Here indeed is a hobby that can be tailored to fit the needs of any individual. One from which almost endless hours of fun, relaxation, education and pride of ownership can be extracted.

Perhaps the easiest way to 'build' a collection is to exchange one's surplus stamps with other collectors. This sort of exchange goes on everyday among thousands of collectors worldwide

coil is when the stamp is shaped differently than a square stamp. re-engraved is when it was not aproved by the U.S. stamp assosiation but is put to sale for collecting reasons
